LAKU Culture is a home for Indonesia's living culture in Mawun, South Lombok. Rather than presenting traditional craft as something to observe from a distance, LAKU brings visitors and apprentices into its everyday practice. Our Culture Keepers work here regularly — weaving textiles, working with natural fibers, preparing traditional food, and sharing the knowledge, materials and stories carried through these practices. The space combines an indoor cultural and workshop area with a covered terrace and places for making, learning, conversation and shared meals. Apprentices stay close to the daily life of LAKU and learn through repetition rather than a classroom-style course. Depending on Culture Keeper and material availability, practices may include Nyensek textile weaving, traditional anyaman and natural-fiber weaving, culinary traditions, batik, pottery, bamboo and rattan. LAKU is located in Mawun, South Lombok, between Kuta Lombok and Selong Belanak.
El entorno
LAKU is in Mawun, South Lombok, between Kuta Lombok and Selong Belanak. The area is surrounded by hills, farms, small villages and some of South Lombok's best-known beaches. Kuta Lombok is the nearest main town for restaurants, cafés, shops, ATMs and other services. Motorbike or scooter is the easiest way to explore independently, while local drivers and taxis can also be arranged. Lombok International Airport is approximately a 30–40 minute drive depending on traffic.
La estancia
Life at LAKU follows a slow, practice-based rhythm. Each apprentice chooses a traditional craft focus and practices consistently with an experienced Culture Keeper. Learning happens through watching, trying, repeating, making mistakes, receiving correction and gradually becoming more independent with the tools and materials. Outside the daily craft practice, apprentices become part of LAKU's wider cultural rhythm. Depending on the week, this may include traditional food and slow-food experiences, tea ceremonies, outdoor movie nights, conversations with Culture Keepers and informal community moments. This is not a conventional art course or tourist workshop. It is an opportunity to spend meaningful time alongside people who carry traditional knowledge through everyday practice. LAKU is built around living traditions rather than performances. Culture Keepers practice their crafts as part of everyday life here. Apprentices learn beside them, visitors come for workshops and conversations, handmade pieces slowly take shape, and food, tea and stories become part of the experience. Apprentices are welcome to take part in LAKU's wider rhythm while respecting the Culture Keepers, their knowledge and the pace of traditional work. Qué hará el artista
Artists and creative practitioners join primarily as apprentices and learners. You will choose a traditional craft or practice to focus on and work alongside an experienced LAKU Culture Keeper. Depending on availability, this may include Nyensek textile weaving, anyaman and natural-fiber weaving, batik, pottery, bamboo, rattan or traditional culinary practice. Your work develops through daily repetition: understanding materials and tools, observing technique, practicing individual steps and gradually completing more of the process independently. Artists are encouraged to bring their own creative perspective, but the purpose of the residency is first to understand and respect the traditional practice rather than immediately reinterpret it. There is no requirement to produce work for LAKU.
Normas de la casa
LAKU is a quiet cultural learning space. We ask apprentices to respect Culture Keepers, local customs, shared spaces and the unhurried pace of traditional work. Daily practice requires consistency and punctuality. Please treat tools, materials and handmade work carefully and ask permission before photographing or recording Culture Keepers or their processes. This is not a party accommodation. Smoking, drugs and excessive noise are not permitted. Please keep shared spaces clean and be considerate of other apprentices, guests and the surrounding community.
Bueno saberlo
Completion Leave with a record of what you practiced and the level you reached. At completion, apprentices receive a mastery level letter from the Culture Keeper and LAKU. It describes the craft focus, practice duration, cultural context, and the level of independence reached during the program.

The EUR 37/day program includes daily apprenticeship with a Culture Keeper, craft materials and workshops, accommodation, two meals per day, laundry support, weekly cultural activities and a completion letter. Apprentices choose their preferred craft when applying. Final placement depends on Culture Keeper, material and date availability. No previous craft experience is required. Beginners are welcome; patience, consistency, curiosity and respect for traditional knowledge are more important than prior technical skill.
