The accommodations for each artist include a private bedroom and either a private bathroom or a bathroom shared with no more than one other artist. Each apartment also has a shared kitchen. All of the accommodations in the village are unique, as they are the guest homes of the village’s residents. Room assignments are at the discretion of the directors, with attention paid to the artist’s discipline. Studio artists are housed close to the studio, writers are housed in accommodations with adequate work space, etc. The studio is a shared facility in the village’s renovated original one-room school house, with dedicated, individual workspaces within; including a table, chair, easel and wall space, if desired. The studio is available to the artists 24/7, with electric outlets and electric lighting. It is bright with natural light and airy. The Mudhouse also offers the use of the use of the grand piano/ private concert hall to musicians/ composers in residence. Writers are housed in accommodations with access to a writing/work space.
The village of Agios Ioannis, located on the southern side of the Greek island of Crete, dates back to the 15th century. In the 1980’s, when irrigation systems brought fresh water from the mountains to the coast, the village became largely uninhabited and many of the stone and mud structures fell into ruin. The Mudhouse is unique among the homes in the village, as a renovated structure utilizing traditional Cretan construction methods. Agios Ioannis is 9km from the coast, up a twisting mountain road, and at 500m above sea level boasts an impressive view of the Libyan sea. To the east the road leads to the village of Schinokapsala and crosses Pshiro hamlet, with a natural spring that feeds into the largest waterfall on the island and the only pine tree forest on Crete. The western road passes through goat grazing lands and olive tree orchards, over the Thripti mountains where it is possible at the narrowest span to see both the East and West coastlines of Crete. The climate of Crete in summer months can be quite warm, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius (around 100 degrees Fahrenheit). Nights may be cool in comparison, requiring a jacket or sweater and long pants.
The majority of the time you spend at Mudhouse is yours to work on your practice. There are various activities scheduled throughout your two-week stay to help you engage with your fellow residents and become immersed in the history of the location. Artists are asked to prepare a Pecha Kucha presentation. Pecha Kucha are 20 slides at 20 seconds per slide, for a 6 minute and 40 seconds presentation. Slides will be submitted as a powerpoint presentation by May 1, and arranged ahead of time for the residency presentation evenings. The closing exhibition will take place at the close of the second week of the Mudhouse. Artists will propose works created during the course of the residency, which will be included in the closing exhibition at the discretion of the directors. Artists may also choose to organize their own studio visits, informal critiques and readings among themselves. Mudhouse organized excursions and events include a guided tour of the Minoan archaeological site, artist presentations in the evenings, the closing exhibition, and a beach trip on the last day of the residency.
Artists are free to develop their own project. We encourage site-specific work inspired by the unique landscape and history. Artists work across all disciplines.
