About our residency directory

Artaway is two things at once. For artist residencies, we maintain a public directory — pages curated from publicly-available information so artists can discover and search residencies in one place. Applications for these residencies happen on each residency's own site (we link out, gated by signup). For exchanges and paid gigs, hosts list directly on Artaway and manage applications through the platform.
Why a directory for residencies
Real residencies — MacDowell, Vermont Studio Center, Khoj, WIELS, dozens more — have their own application infrastructure: juries, deadlines, portfolio requirements, sometimes fees. Artaway can't replicate that, and shouldn't try. Instead we index them as a free public directory and link out, so artists get a modern discovery layer and residencies get qualified traffic to their existing application page. No fees, no permissions required.
About the photos
We include one or two public photos per directory listing, sourced from the residency's own Instagram or website. We don't watermark them, crop out credit, or present the relationship as anything other than what it is: a public directory entry. We don't charge anyone to view or contact these listings.
Updating or removing a listing
If you run a residency listed here and want to update the photos, description, deadlines, or application URL — or you'd prefer not to be listed at all — email hello@artaway.org and we'll either give you edit access or remove the listing within 48 hours, no questions asked.
Switching to native mode
Some smaller residencies without their own application form prefer to receive applications through Artaway directly. If that's you, you can claim the listing and switch it to native mode — Artaway-hosted apply form, applications routed to your inbox. The directory listing becomes yours to edit fully.
Why this approach
The alternative — an empty platform with no visible residencies — is worse for everyone. A comprehensive, curated directory makes Artaway useful from day one and gives residencies free discovery. Hosts who want native engagement opt in; everyone else gets the visibility for nothing.
