What Artaway is

Artaway is a platform connecting artists with spaces around the world — residencies, studios, guesthouses, galleries, eco-lodges, and private homes — for creative exchanges. An artist finds a place to work; the space receives creative energy, presence, and often a concrete contribution: a finished piece, a workshop, a mural, a series of classes.

The platform is young and in its launch phase. The first hosts to join are helping build an international community of art exchanges — the idea isn't to replace institutional grants or established programs, but to open one more door for artists to find their space, without having to rely solely on word of mouth or personal networks.

How an exchange works

Every exchange is different. Some artists offer a finished work in exchange for two weeks of accommodation. Others run a workshop for the local community in exchange for housing and materials. Others take part in a paid residency with a fee, where the only expectation is to be present and create.

You set the terms. When creating your listing, you specify the duration, what you offer (a room, a studio, meals, materials), and what you expect in return (a work, a workshop, days of labor on the property, or simply a creative presence). Artists see all of this before applying, so expectations are clear from the start.

What you get

Visibility for your space among a growing community of international and Brazilian artists. A stream of applications that you review on your own time — you choose who to accept, decline, or pass on. Direct messages to talk with each applicant before deciding.

Listing your space is free and there is no commission on exchanges. When you accept an artist, the agreement is directly between the two of you — Artaway does not handle payments or stay in the middle of the conversation once contact is made.

How to create a strong listing

Real photos. Show the studio, the room, the view, the surroundings. Cell phone photos taken in natural light work better than heavily produced professional shots. Artists want to see what the space looks like day to day.

An honest description. Write as if you were explaining it to a friend. Talk about what makes it special (the light, the quiet, the community, access to nature) and what might be a challenge (remote location, shared bathroom, no internet). Artists value transparency.

Clear terms. Be specific about duration, what's included (materials, meals, transport), and what you expect in return. The clearer the listing, the better the applicants.

What makes your space unique. What does yours have? A surrounding artist community, access to a specific landscape, rare equipment, the cultural context of the region? Tell the story of your space.

How much does it cost? It's free. No fees, no commission.

How long does an exchange last? From a few days to several months — you decide. Stays of two to four weeks are most common.

How do I know if an artist is serious? You talk with each applicant before accepting. Review their portfolio, ask for a video call, ask about their project for the stay.

What if things don't work out? Be clear about expectations from the start and communicate openly during the stay.

Do I need to speak English? No — Artaway has artists from many countries and languages. You can list the languages you speak on your profile.

Creating a profile takes about 15 minutes. You describe your space, upload a few photos, and define what you offer and what you expect in return. From there, artists start discovering your listing and sending applications.
