What hosts expect from visiting artists

Understanding host expectations is key to a successful exchange. From working hours to social etiquette, here's what most hosts hope for when opening their doors.

Respect the space

You're a guest in someone's home, studio, or venue. Treat the space with care: clean up after yourself, follow house rules, and ask before using shared resources. Even small gestures — washing your dishes, keeping your workspace tidy — go a long way.

If you're using specialised equipment (kilns, print presses, darkrooms), ask for a walkthrough before diving in. Accidents happen, but preventable damage from carelessness can sour an exchange quickly.

Communicate openly

Most friction in art exchanges comes from unspoken expectations. If something isn't working — the studio is too cold, you need more quiet time, you're struggling creatively — say so. Hosts can't fix problems they don't know about.

Similarly, keep your host informed about your schedule. If you'll be out late, working through the night, or leaving for a day trip, a quick message avoids worry and shows consideration.

Contribute meaningfully

An art exchange isn't a free holiday. Most hosts offer their space because they value creative energy and cultural exchange. Be present, be engaged, and honour whatever contribution you've agreed to — whether that's a finished artwork, a community workshop, or simply sharing your process.

Some hosts love hosting dinner conversations about art; others prefer to give you space. Read the room and adapt. The best exchanges feel like a collaboration, not a transaction.

Be flexible

Things won't always go as planned. The studio might be smaller than the photos suggested. The neighbourhood might be quieter (or louder) than expected. Your creative plans might need to shift.

Adaptability is the most underrated skill for any artist exchange. Hosts appreciate artists who roll with changes gracefully, find creative solutions, and maintain a positive attitude even when things aren't perfect.

Leave it better than you found it

When your exchange ends, leave the space clean and in good order. A thank-you note, a small gift, or even just a thoughtful message afterwards goes a long way. If you've created work during your stay, discuss with your host whether they'd like to keep a piece.

A strong ending leads to good reviews, future recommendations, and an open door if you ever want to return.
