About this opportunity

The space

A small independent seaside studio in Ventimiglia, on the Italian Riviera, offered to painters and visual artists looking for a quiet week by the Mediterranean. The apartment is just a few steps from the beach and has access to the building’s shared rooftop terrace, a large open-air space where you can relax, read, sketch or simply enjoy the Mediterranean light. It can accommodate one artist or a couple. I am particularly interested in painting, drawing and printmaking. The idea is a simple and personal exchange: I offer the accommodation free of charge for up to one week and, in return, I would like to receive an original work by the artist for my private collection. The work does not necessarily have to be created during the stay or inspired by Ventimiglia. It may be an existing work, something created here, or something that comes out of the experience. I prefer to decide together with each artist, according to their practice and work. This is a personal and informal exchange rather than an institutional residency. There are no artistic assignments or required subjects.

Surroundings

Ventimiglia lies at the meeting point of the Italian and French Rivieras, in a Mediterranean landscape with an extraordinary artistic history. Just along the coast is Bordighera, whose gardens, palms, sea and light fascinated Claude Monet, while inland lies Dolceacqua, whose bridge and village he famously painted during his stay on the Riviera. This entire stretch of the Mediterranean, from Liguria to the Côte d’Azur, became a remarkable territory for modern art. Nice, Menton, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the Fondation Maeght are within easy reach, in an area associated with some of the greatest artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Closer to home, Ventimiglia offers the sea, the historic old town, the botanical landscape of the Hanbury Gardens and a dramatic hinterland of valleys, medieval villages and mountains. The French border is only a few kilometres away. The studio itself is just a few steps from the beach, about two minutes on foot from the town centre and seven minutes from the railway station, making it easy to explore both the Italian and French Rivieras without a car. For an artist, it is a place of contrasts and possible inspiration: Mediterranean light, sea and mountains, palms and old stone, Italy and France, nature and border town.

Life during a stay

I’ll be happy to spend some time together if the artist wishes — talking about art, sharing a meal, discovering local places, food and the surrounding area. As a chef and someone deeply connected to this region, I’d be delighted to show some of the places I love. At the same time, I completely understand that an artist may come here looking for solitude, concentration and their own rhythm. There are no expectations of spending time together: privacy and independence will always be fully respected. The stay can therefore be as social or as solitary as the artist prefers.

What the artist will do

An original work of art for my private collection, preferably a painting, drawing or print. It does not need to be created during the stay or inspired by Ventimiglia: it may be an existing work, a new work, or something created during the residency. I would like to agree on the work together beforehand, based on the artist’s portfolio and practice. There are no required subjects or artistic assignments — I am interested in something genuinely representative of the artist’s work.
