About this opportunity
The space
Fez Art Residency is a decentralised, artist-led residency rather than a single studio complex. Artists stay in a private apartment in the heart of Fez Medina, with access to terraces and flexible spaces for light creative work. Where a dedicated workspace is needed, we can arrange studio options according to the artist's practice. Our approach is deliberately flexible: the Medina becomes part of the residency itself, with artists encouraged to explore, research, make, meet people and allow the city to inform their practice.
Surroundings
FAR is based within the UNESCO-listed Fez Medina, one of the world's great historic cities and the centre of Morocco's extraordinary artisanal heritage. Ceramics, textiles, leather, metalwork, woodwork and other crafts remain part of everyday life, making the Medina a living creative environment rather than simply a historic backdrop. Fez is served by Fez-Saiss International Airport, with connections to a number of European cities. Airport transfers can be arranged, and we help artists navigate arrival in the car-free Medina.
Life during a stay
Our main Artist Immersion Week combines independent time with a personalised introduction to the creative life of Fez. We get to know your practice and interests before you arrive, allowing us to shape relevant introductions, visits and experiences around you. There is no pressure to produce a finished outcome. Artists may come to make, research, experiment, reflect or develop a new direction. Alongside creative growth, FAR places particular emphasis on professional development and arts entrepreneurship, encouraging artists to think about how their work is communicated, positioned, encountered and sustained beyond the residency. Longer and bespoke stays can also be arranged.
What the artist will do
Artists are encouraged to use their time in Fez according to the needs of their own practice, whether making, researching, experimenting, documenting, reflecting or developing a new project. Through our Artist Immersion programme, we introduce artists to the creative life of the Medina, including relevant artisans, workshops, materials and places connected to their interests. Time is also set aside for conversations around professional development and arts entrepreneurship, helping artists consider how their work, career and future opportunities might develop beyond their stay. There is no required outcome or pressure to produce. The emphasis is on exploration, connection and development, with each residency shaped around the individual artist.
Good to know
FAR is particularly suited to curious, independently minded artists who want more than accommodation and studio space. We are interested in artists who want to engage meaningfully with Fez while thinking seriously about the development of their practice and career. Alongside the Artist Immersion Week, FAR runs longer-term artist development programmes and Host a Retreat, which supports artists and creative practitioners in developing and leading their own programmes in Fez. Our aim is simple: to use Fez as a catalyst for both creative and professional growth.

Program notes
Each residency is shaped around the individual artist rather than a fixed timetable. Before arrival, we discuss your practice, interests and what you hope to gain from your time in Fez, allowing us to personalise the programme and identify relevant introductions and opportunities. The residency balances guided immersion with plenty of independent time. Activities may include orientation within the Medina, visits to artisan workshops, introductions to local creatives and conversations around professional development and arts entrepreneurship. Participation is flexible and there is no required artistic outcome. We encourage artists to arrive with curiosity and an openness to allowing Fez, its people and its creative culture to influence the direction of their stay.
