About this opportunity
The space
Ubuntu Art Village combines three en-suite guest rooms with three adaptable art studios. The rooftop lounge also functions as a shared co-working space during the day. The host presents the space as an artist residency and guesthouse rather than a funded programme.
Surroundings
Based in Bwejuu, a peaceful coastal village on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, just 20m from the beach. Expect white sand, turquoise water, palm trees and a relaxed local atmosphere. Nearby, you can enjoy swimming, beach walks, kitesurfing in Paje, snorkeling, diving, boat trips and exploring local villages. Jozani Forest is also within easy reach. Getting Here: Ubuntu is around 1–1.5 hours from Zanzibar International Airport by car. We can arrange a private airport transfer, or you can take a taxi or local transport. Once here, most of Bwejuu can be explored on foot or by local transport like a tuk-tuk.
Life during a stay
Artists can use studio time to paint, write, design, or develop another self-directed project. The studios have flexible layouts and natural light. Ask the host which room and studio are available for the dates you have in mind. Life at Ubuntu follows the rhythm of island living — slow mornings, shared meals, creative days and evenings filled with conversation. Artists live alongside guests and the Ubuntu team, sharing spaces while still having room to focus and create. Some days are quiet and reflective, others spontaneous and social. It’s a place to create, connect and experience Zanzibar.
What the artist will do
Artists are free to work on recent works or new projects. The choice is theirs to explore with. We use the communal areas and studios for work and encourage our Resident's not to use the room for any practice. Thus space is to relax and un-wind.

Good to know
Residency package details, availability, pricing, and any programme activities should be confirmed directly with the host before making travel plans. We also host an UTU Friday event. This is Ubuntu’s weekly community night — a relaxed evening of music, food, drinks and connection. Artists, guests, locals and visitors come together to enjoy live performances, DJs, open mic sessions and good conversation. We introduce our Resident's to the community as well as showcase their work at the end of stay. It’s an informal space to meet new people, share creativity and experience the social side of Ubuntu.
