The space
Romantso Residency is a self-directed creative residency located inside Romantso Creative Hub, in the historic centre of Athens. Housed in the former printing plant of the iconic Greek magazine *Romantso*, the building is today home to a lively community of artists, designers, cultural organisations, creative businesses and independent professionals. Residents stay in private rooms within the building, each with its own ensuite bathroom, offering privacy and comfort for longer stays while keeping you directly connected to the everyday life of the creative hub. Rather than prescribing a programme or creative process, the residency gives you the freedom to shape your own time and practice. You can work independently, meet people from the Romantso community, attend events, explore Athens, or simply use the residency as a base for developing a project or conducting research. Residents have access to the shared spaces of the creative hub and become part of the wider BIOS cultural ecosystem. Depending on the nature of the project and the programme schedule, there may also be opportunities to share work through an exhibition, open studio, screening, talk, workshop or performance. The residency welcomes artists, designers, architects, writers, curators, researchers, filmmakers, musicians, performing artists, creative technologists and other cultural and creative practitioners. Minimum stay is one month. Longer stays are welcome.
Surroundings
Romantso is located in the historic centre of Athens, at Anaxagora 3–5, within walking distance of many of the city's cultural districts, museums, galleries, independent spaces, cafés, markets and neighbourhoods. Athens offers a particularly rich environment for a self-directed residency: ancient and contemporary culture coexist with a constantly evolving network of artist-run spaces, cultural organisations, festivals, design practices and independent initiatives. The central location makes it easy to explore the city on foot or by public transport and to use Romantso as a base for discovering Athens and its wider cultural scene.
Life during a stay
There is no prescribed daily schedule at Romantso. Residents are free to organise their time according to their own practice, project and interests. What makes the experience different is that you are not living separately from the creative community you came to Athens to encounter. You are staying inside an active creative hub where people work, meet, collaborate and produce cultural activity every day. A day might be spent working independently, researching the city, meeting people from the hub, visiting exhibitions or exploring Athens, before returning to Romantso for a concert, performance, talk or gathering. Residents also receive free access to all BIOS-produced cultural events throughout their stay and are connected to the wider BIOS network of cultural venues, programmes and creative communities across Athens. The residency works particularly well for people who value independence but also want the possibility of exchange, unexpected encounters and becoming temporarily embedded in an existing creative community.
What the artist will do
The residency is self-directed, so there is no prescribed theme or expected outcome. Residents are invited to use their time at Romantso to develop an existing project, begin new work, conduct research, experiment with ideas or simply create the space for reflection and exploration. We welcome projects across artistic and creative disciplines, as well as interdisciplinary practices that engage with Athens, its communities or its contemporary cultural landscape.

Residents gain access not only to Romantso but to the wider BIOS ecosystem and its cultural activity across Athens. Public presentation of your work is not a requirement. For residents who would like to share the outcome of their stay, exhibitions, talks, screenings, performances, workshops or open studios can be explored depending on the project, available spaces and BIOS programming.
