Residents stay in a historic building with private bedrooms and shared studio and living spaces. Artists are encouraged to engage with the local textile scene through workshops, studio visits, excursions, and community events. Residents have access to practical studio facilities, private accommodation, and welcoming shared spaces that support both focused creative work and informal exchange. Each resident has a private bedroom, while the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and studio are shared. There may be other artists staying at the residency at the same time, creating opportunities for informal exchange and shared experiences. However, we cannot guarantee that other residents will be present during any particular stay. The residency is therefore equally suited to independent work and to periods of more social exchange. Although the centre is currently undergoing renovations, we make every effort to keep the spaces functional and comfortable.
At Tekstiilikeskus, we support artists not only with studio space, tools, and materials, but with meaningful connections. We bring residents into dialogue with local artists, craftspeople, academics, memory institutions, and cultural workers, because we believe that encounters and conversations are as important as time in the studio. This residency is especially suited to creative practitioners who value exchange, reflection, and community — who understand that artistic development grows through people as much as through practice.
The residency is first and foremost self-led. Artists are given the time, space, and freedom to develop their own practice, research, and ideas according to their individual interests and creative direction. There is no required programme or expected outcome. We also aim to create opportunities for cultural exchange and local engagement, introducing artists to the region’s textile traditions, makers, craftspeople, farmers, landscapes, and everyday life. These encounters are suggestions rather than requirements, and the extent of social engagement depends on each artist’s practice and interests. Residents are welcome to share their own knowledge and creative processes through conversations, workshops, open studios, or other forms of exchange when this feels relevant to their work. We see these encounters as a reciprocal exchange, where artists and local communities can learn from one another. We are particularly interested in the exploration and (re)discovery of local textile heritage, whether through research, making, material experimentation, storytelling, or collaboration. Artists are free to engage with this heritage in ways that are meaningful to their own practice.
