Make room for new work, new encounters and a different rhythm by the Aegean. The MANTILITY & EPÀRCHÎA Artist Residency brings together artistic practice, contemporary design and the everyday life of Kavala, northern Greece. The experience connects three complementary settings: MANTILITY Studio, EPÀRCHÎA Design Boîte and Tourloo Guesthouse. MANTILITY Studio introduces residents to the creative world of MANTILITY – The Silk Scarf Gallery, where collaborations with more than 50 artists have brought original artworks to life on Greek silk. It offers a context for exchanging ideas about image, colour, storytelling and the relationship between art and everyday objects. EPÀRCHÎA Design Boîte, opposite the historic Kamares aqueduct, combines an exhibition space, a Greek design shop and a café-bar. Here, residents can encounter exhibitions, meet people from the city and become part of an active cultural setting. Accommodation is at Tourloo Guesthouse. Living and creative activities take place across these separate locations, allowing residents to experience Kavala through its streets, neighbourhoods and daily encounters. Workspace arrangements and any presentation requirements are discussed before arrival, according to each artist’s practice and project.
Kavala is a coastal city whose steep streets open onto unexpected views of the Aegean. The old town of Panagia, the historic aqueduct, former tobacco warehouses and a working harbour create a landscape rich in architectural detail, collective memory and contemporary life. Artists can find material in many directions: the geometry of buildings, changing light on the water, neighbourhood conversations, traces of trade and migration, or the meeting of urban life and the sea. Cafés, markets and waterfront walks offer opportunities to observe, sketch, write and gradually become familiar with the city. Kavala can be reached via Kavala International Airport or by road from Thessaloniki. We can provide practical travel guidance before arrival so residents can plan their journey and onward transfer.
A stay unfolds around your practice, with time for independent work, exploration and conversation. A morning might begin with writing, drawing or research, followed by a walk through Panagia or along the harbour. Time with the MANTILITY team can open conversations about artistic processes, materials and translating an idea across different media. Later, EPÀRCHÎA offers a place to meet, visit an exhibition or enjoy a drink as the city moves into its evening rhythm. Residents are encouraged to bring a project, a question or an area of curiosity they wish to explore. The balance between focused work and shared activities is discussed individually, allowing the experience to respond to each artist’s interests. Depending on the project and programme, a stay may include an artist talk, an informal sharing of work or a presentation at EPÀRCHÎA, arranged together in advance.
Artists are invited to develop their own projects, pursue research or experiment with new ideas at their own pace. Kavala’s coastal landscape, layered histories, architecture and everyday life offer a rich starting point for work exploring place, memory, identity and storytelling. Through exchanges with the MANTILITY team, residents can also explore relationships between fine art, illustration, textiles and contemporary design. We welcome both emerging ideas and projects already in progress. An informal artist talk or sharing of work at EPÀRCHÎA can be arranged together, according to each resident’s interests and the stage of their practice.
Residents are asked to respect the accommodation, workspaces, neighbours and local quiet hours. Smoking is permitted outdoors only. Workspace access and use of equipment are arranged with the hosts. Please discuss any visitors, accompanying guests or special requirements with us before booking.
We welcome enquiries from visual artists, illustrators, designers, photographers, writers and other creative practitioners interested in the relationship between place and practice. The residency will especially appeal to independent, curious people who enjoy discovering a city through its details and engaging with a small creative team. MANTILITY’s experience with silk and artist collaborations offers a distinctive source of exchange for residents interested in textiles and applied arts. Any proposed silk production, commercial collaboration or exhibition is discussed separately, with its own scope and arrangements. Please tell us about your practice, what you would like to explore in Kavala and any workspace, equipment or accessibility requirements, so we can establish how the residency can support your stay.
