We have two facilities on separate properties that are walking distance from each other. Our facilities are community studio spaces that are used by visiting and local AIRS, AAC staff, class attendees, and studio members that live in the San Juans. Our Forest Campus sits on 9 acres of hilly forest and open space, with buildings and residences connected via woodland footpaths. This is where our ceramics studio and darkroom are located. In addition to being a community art center, our forest campus is also a communal residence. Many of our staff live communally at our forest campus, and during our AIR season, artists-in-residence share communal kitchen and bathroom space with them. Our Field Campus: In 2025, we acquired a lavender farm, which includes a 15,000 sq ft building that we have transformed into multidisciplinary art studios, gallery, and store! We are calling this facility the Art Barn. The Art Barn currently houses equipment and shared studio space for printmaking, fiber art, 2D media, and private studio spaces for local and visiting artists. AIRS will have a dedicated studio space in the art barn that they can set up as they wish. Detailed descriptions of our studio and equipment can be found here. Studio Access: AIRs have 24 access to all studio spaces on both campuses, other than the evenings where the studios are being cleaned.
We are located on rural San Juan Island, the largest island in an archipelago with the same name, in Northwest Washington State. The island is accessible via public ferry from Anacortes, WA, which is about 2 hours north of Seattle.
Exchange: The work exchange for AIRs is 15 hours per week and includes running art activities in the community, studio maintenance, and other program support. A personal living stipend of $300 per month is included in this program.
