About this opportunity

The space

Nestled in the mountains and countryside of the Romsdal region in Western Norway, Lykkeslet gård is an old Norwegian farmhouse dating back to around 1750. With its traditional character, peaceful surroundings and connection to the natural landscape, the farm offers a welcoming place to slow down, find inspiration and immerse yourself in rural Norwegian life. We welcome individual artists, couples and small groups looking for somewhere a little different to live, work, create and explore. Whether you're a writer looking for uninterrupted time, a musician developing a new project, a photographer seeking inspiration or simply someone who wants to experience a quieter way of life, Lykkeslet offers space to make that happen. A place to stay, create and share The farmhouse has three bedrooms and can accommodate guests in a variety of arrangements. Artists can book an individual private bedroom, sharing the kitchen, bathroom, sitting room and other communal spaces with fellow guests. Alternatively, the entire farmhouse can be reserved for individuals, couples or groups of friends who wish to share the experience privately. We believe that shared experiences, as well as time alone, are an important part of creative retreats. Guests are welcome to spend their days independently, work on their own projects or come together around the kitchen table. An immersive farm experience Lykkeslet is more than somewhere to stay. It is an old farmstead that we are gradually bringing back to life, and guests are welcome to become part of that process. Depending on the season and their interests, there are opportunities to get involved in gardening, growing food, chopping firewood, maintaining the grounds and other everyday farm activities. There is no obligation to participate; guests can be as involved or independent as they wish.

Surroundings

Nestled in the Romsdal countryside of Western Norway, Lykkeslet gård is surrounded by the mountains, forests, rivers and valleys that make this part of Norway so special. The region offers an extraordinary range of outdoor experiences throughout the year, with spectacular landscapes to explore in every season. In summer, there are opportunities for hiking, mountaineering, climbing, fishing, exploring forests and rivers, and discovering the spectacular mountain landscapes of the region. Winter brings an entirely different atmosphere, with opportunities for snowshoeing, skiing, sledging and exploring the snow-covered countryside. Whether you prefer adventurous days outdoors or quiet afternoons reading, writing and enjoying the surroundings, there is plenty of room to find your own rhythm. We have good transport options for getting here; you can take a train from Oslo city or straight from the airport, make one change and get out at Bjorli station which is only a 15 minute drive from the farm. This is also one of, if not, the most stunning train journeys in Norway. You also have the option to take the bus which takes pretty much the same route and can be taken from both Oslo city centre and Oslo airport. The bus drops you just a few minutes from the farm, but you must book the ticket for "Kylling" (the stop name).

Life during a stay

Life during your stay Life at Lykkeslet gård is relaxed, flexible and largely shaped by the seasons. There is no fixed schedule or expectation of how you should spend your time. Some days might be spent exploring the mountains, following nearby walking trails, fishing or discovering the surrounding countryside. Others might be dedicated to writing, painting, making music, working on a personal project or simply enjoying a slower pace of life. The farmhouse is a cosy place to return to after a day outdoors, with its traditional character, old wood-burning stoves and welcoming communal spaces. Light the stove, make yourself something warm, settle in with a book or gather around the table for a meal and a conversation. There are plenty of opportunities to get outside, from short local walks and forest trails to longer mountain adventures. Equally, there is no shortage of reasons to stay in, enjoy the quiet and make the most of having time and space to yourself. Guests are welcome to get involved in everyday farm life if they wish, whether that's spending time in the garden, helping with small restoration projects or chopping a little firewood. Equally, you are free to do your own thing and follow your own interests. For everyday essentials, there is a small local shop approximately ten minutes' walk from the farmhouse, making it easy to pick up basic groceries and other necessities.

What the artist will do

What will the artist work on? That's entirely up to you! Lykkeslet gård is an open and flexible creative space for people from all backgrounds and disciplines. You might arrive with a specific project in mind, or simply come looking for a change of scenery, inspiration and time to yourself. You could spend your days writing music, composing songs, creating poetry, writing articles, painting, drawing, photography, developing new ideas or working on an existing project. You might be a digital nomad looking for a peaceful place to work remotely, or someone who simply wants to step away from everyday routines and enjoy a different way of life. There are no fixed expectations, schedules or creative requirements. You're free to follow your own interests, work independently, spend time outdoors or get involved in the everyday life of the farm. We also welcome the opportunity for people to meet, share ideas, exchange skills and perhaps collaborate on something along the way. Whether you come with a clear creative direction or no plans whatsoever, you're welcome here. Make the space your own and see where your time at Lykkeslet takes you.

House rules

We want Lykkeslet gård to feel like a welcoming, relaxed and respectful home for everyone. There are just a few simple things we'd ask guests to keep in mind: - Respect shared spaces: Please keep the kitchen, bathroom and communal areas reasonably clean and tidy, and leave them as you would like to find them. - Be considerate of others: Everyone has their own routines and projects. Please respect other guests' privacy and keep noise to a reasonable level, particularly during the evenings and nights. - Treat the farmhouse with care: This is an old house that we are gradually restoring. Please be mindful of its age, furnishings and facilities. - Fire and wood-burning stoves: Please take care when using the stoves and follow any instructions provided. Never leave an active fire unattended. - Farm activities and tools: Guests are welcome to get involved in farm activities, but please check with us before using tools, equipment or entering work areas. - Nature and surroundings: Please respect the local environment, wildlife and countryside. Leave outdoor areas as you find them. - Shared responsibility: We encourage everyone to contribute a little to keeping the farmhouse comfortable and welcoming. Above all, be kind, communicate openly and enjoy your stay. We want everyone to feel at home here!

Good to know

A few things to note - A living renovation project: Lykkeslet gård is an old farmhouse that we are gradually restoring. Some parts of the house are still undergoing renovation. The bathroom and essential facilities are fully functional, but some areas are still a work in progress aesthetically. - A rustic farmhouse: This is an old rural home with plenty of character, rather than a polished hotel or modern holiday apartment. Expect traditional features, a few imperfections and a relaxed, lived-in atmosphere. - Shared spaces: Guests booking individual bedrooms share the kitchen, bathroom, sitting room and other communal facilities with any other guests staying at the farm. - A little independence: The farm is in a rural setting, so having some flexibility and a willingness to make yourself at home is part of the experience. A small local shop is around ten minutes' walk away. - Respect for the surroundings: We encourage guests to enjoy the outdoors, respect the local environment and be considerate of the farmhouse and other people staying here.
