Nestled in the forests of Mugello, in the Tuscan Apennines just an hour from Florence, Tertulia is an international coliving community and a regenerative agricultural farm dedicated to exploring new relationships between people, nature and rural life. Our home is a beautifully restored 18th-century farmhouse surrounded by chestnut forests, olive groves, vegetable gardens, meadows and wild landscapes. Here, we explore ways of living and working that reconnect people with nature, with each other and with the local community. Founded in 2005 as a project to regenerate an abandoned rural settlement, Tertulia has gradually evolved into a living laboratory for sustainability, permaculture and community life. Today, we welcome people from around the world who share our curiosity about alternative ways of living, creating and contributing to a more sustainable future. Life here follows the rhythms of the seasons. You might spend your morning working on an artistic project, your afternoon exploring the forest, and your evening sharing dinner and conversations with fellow residents. We offer comfortable accommodation, shared living spaces, coworking facilities, a communal kitchen and access to the surrounding natural environment.
Located in the forests of Mugello, Tuscany, Tertulia is surrounded by extensive woodland, including wild areas, chestnut forests, olive groves, meadows and agricultural spaces. There are opportunities to participate in farming activities, learn about permaculture, practise yoga, discover the surrounding countryside and connect with the local community of Mugello. Reached primarily by car from nearby Vicchio (10 minutes), which is a natural place for colivers to go for a coffee. Borgo San Lorenzo offers local farmers market as well as traditional Tuscan vibes with trattorias and small shops and restaurants. Trains from Firenze go to Borgo and Vicchio at a daily schedule.
Tertulia is more than a place to stay. It is a living experiment in regenerative agriculture, sustainability and community life. During your residency, you will become part of our international coliving community of sharing thoughts, ideas and activities while maintaining the freedom to pursue your individual projects. You will also share everyday experiences with people from different countries and backgrounds, participate in communal dinners and have opportunities to explore farming activities, local traditions and the surrounding Tuscan countryside. We warmly encourage residents to share their creative process with the community, whether through informal conversations, an open studio session, a workshop or a presentation of the completed work.
We welcome artists and creative practitioners working across different disciplines, including visual arts, painting, drawing and illustration, photography and film, writing, carpentry, poetry and literature, sculpture and crafts, music and sound, design and interdisciplinary artistic practices. However, you do not need to work specifically with environmental themes to join us. What matters most is your desire to develop your artistic practice in a welcoming and inspiring setting that combines the relationship between creativity, nature, sustainability and community.
No smoking indoors, working areas to be respected as spaces for focusing on work.
As a self-funded artist in Tertulia, you can find both the tranquillity to focus on you individual practice as well as the inspiration that comes from sharing everyday life with an international community. Our surroundings offer countless possibilities for artistic exploration: ancient chestnut trees, changing seasons, abandoned agricultural materials and tools, old wood, farmland, traditional Tuscan landscapes and the everyday rhythms of rural life. Artists can work on their individual projects and/or combine these with on-site projects. Generally, we warmly invite all visitors to contribute with innovative ideas to improve our space by designing and realising site-specific artworks or maintenance using natural, reclaimed or repurposed materials available on the farm. In Tertulia, artistic expression is thus nursered by the combination of community life and the natural environment, and many of the facilities here have evolved due to the creativity that flourishes through the encounter between souls, soil and inspiration.
