Off Tropics is a self-directed residency in Chiang Mai, Thailand, designed for artists, curators, producers, cultural organisers, writers, researchers, composers, filmmakers, and cultural practitioners seeking time, focus, and space for sustained work. Situated in a quiet residential area surrounded by greenery, the residency combines accommodation with a private studio environment suitable for writing, composition, research, editing, sound work, and small-scale artistic development. Founded by artists working internationally across sound, performance, and moving image, Off Tropics emerged from a desire to create the kind of place often missing between commercial accommodation and institutional residencies: an affordable environment where concentrated work, rest, and reflection can coexist. The residency is intentionally flexible. Residents may use the space for artistic research, project development, writing, remote work, or simply as a temporary base from which to engage with Chiang Mai's cultural landscape. Depending on availability, informal studio visits, artist conversations, introductions to local practitioners, and additional artistic or technical support may be arranged separately. Off Tropics prioritises autonomy, long-form thinking, and the conditions necessary for meaningful creative work.
