About this opportunity

The space

Casa na Ilha is an artist residency on Ilhabela, off the northern coast of São Paulo state, Brazil. Our main residency home offers space for focused creative work, with private or shared accommodation, studio space, Wi-Fi and kitchen access. Founded in 2017, Casa na Ilha hosts multidisciplinary residencies, writing sessions and workshops. More than 300 international artists have joined us to develop their practice, explore new ideas and undertake field research.

Surroundings

Ilhabela is an island of Atlantic rainforest, beaches and waterfalls, much of it protected by Ilhabela State Park. Trails offer opportunities to explore the forest and reach natural swimming pools. Some beaches are accessible only by trail, boat or 4×4 vehicle. Guided hikes to Pico do Baepi and opportunities to explore shipwrecks are also available in the area. Perequê is a commercial center with banks, supermarkets, art supplies and other shops. Vila, the historic center, has older buildings, a museum, a small gallery, craft shops, restaurants, cafés and convenience stores. Artists can travel via São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport and arrange onward travel to the island. Contact us for complete transfer directions before booking.

Life during a stay

Residencies last two to four weeks and host two to seven artists at a time. You will share the space with people from different disciplines, with opportunities to exchange ideas and discuss work in progress. There is no fixed program or itinerary. Guidance and individual project discussions are available on request, at a pace that respects your practice. We can also help you make contacts and arrangements relevant to your project. A weekly dinner is prepared at the house and shared with the artists in residence.

What the artist will do

Use your time for self-directed creative work, research or developing ideas. You can continue a work in progress or begin a new project, with no pressure to produce a finished work. Project discussions and support are available on request.

Good to know

Eligibility: We welcome both established artists and emerging artists with promising work. Ilhabela remains Casa na Ilha's main base. We also offer separate itinerant programs in the Amazon rainforest and Argentine Patagonia, inviting artists to explore different ecosystems, communities and cultures.
