Amazônia: Amazon Session is a multidisciplinary artist residency in Alter do Chão, Brazil. The program is hosted at Campos de Heliantos, a space for experimentation and contemporary artistic expression, with shared accommodation, studio space, Wi-Fi and kitchen access. Campos de Heliantos is a research center for the “Creative Self” (Eu Criativo). It hosts artistic residencies and conversations around ecofeminism, contemporary art, performance and artistic production.
Alter do Chão lies on the right bank of the Tapajós River in the Brazilian Amazon. Its clear waters and seasonally flooded igapó forests provide a setting for observation, field research and reflection. The residency invites artists to engage with the region's biodiversity, communities and ecological knowledge, exploring the relationship between creative practice and the surrounding environment.
The residency balances quiet, independent work with optional group activities and conversations. Two curators/guides will be on site to facilitate activities, including explorations of primary forests and riverside communities. You can take part in these shared experiences or spend time on your own practice. All organized activities are optional, and the program respects each participant's pace. The group is limited to ten participants. Shared accommodation and communal living are part of the experience.
Pursue self-directed creative work and field research, using observation and “artistic foraging” to explore ideas connected to the forest and its communities. The emphasis is on inquiry and process rather than production. Optional guided activities and group discussions can support your practice; you decide how to use your time.
Session dates: 17–31 August 2027 (two weeks). Eligibility: We welcome emerging and established practitioners from all disciplines, including visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, curators, writers, poets, musicians, sound artists, performers, botanists, scientists, activists and researchers. Applicants from non-traditional backgrounds are also encouraged to apply. Language: Both curators speak English, so Portuguese or Spanish is not required. They facilitate informal communication, but formal translation services are not provided.
