About this opportunity
The space
Pauline Agnew teaches participants to find the shapes, lines, gestures and colour relationships within a landscape, then use those elements to make stronger abstract paintings. The workshop covers composition, southern-inspired palettes, working from photographs and treating unexpected marks as opportunities rather than mistakes. Individual guidance addresses each painter's artistic goals, while the large studio provides room for sustained work across four and a half intensive days.
Surroundings
The retreat is based in Cómpeta, an Andalusian village of white houses, flowered balconies, vineyards and views toward the Mediterranean and Almijara mountains. A half-day coach trip to the coastal town of Nerja is included. Málaga Airport is the nearest airport, a little over an hour away.
Life during a stay
Six nights are included at Hotel Balcón de Cómpeta in a private room with breakfast. Rooms with balconies and views toward the sea have been reserved for the retreat, subject to final room allocation.
Good to know
The retreat runs October 6 to 12, 2026, and costs EUR 2,495, with a EUR 400 deposit. Included are six nights, breakfast, five lunches, an opening dinner, a final dinner with flamenco, a Nerja excursion, 4.5 days of tuition and most art materials. Bring brushes and the small additional supply list. Travel to Cómpeta, insurance and unlisted meals are excluded.

Itinerary
October 6 · Opening dinner
Arrive in Cómpeta and begin the retreat with the Taste of Cómpeta dinner at 7:30 pm.
Landscape to abstraction
Study shape, line, gesture, composition, colour and light through demonstrations and intensive studio work.
Photographic reference
Learn to select and use landscape photographs as a starting point without becoming tied to literal description.
Nerja excursion
Join the half-day coastal visit to gather visual material and experience another Andalusian landscape.
Final dinner and departure
Close with dinner and a flamenco performance, then depart after breakfast on October 12.
