About this opportunity
The space
Marta Afonso leads a hands-on progression from gathering visual ideas to printing, dyeing, assembling and stitching a finished textile work. Participants carve a personal stamp, experiment with blocks and stencils, prepare natural dye pastes and build layers through patchwork, appliqué and sashiko-inspired embroidery. The aim is not only a set of samples but a cohesive textile panel, supported by studio demonstrations, individual guidance and time to develop a personal visual language.
Surroundings
The retreat starts with two nights in Lisbon, including a day exploring galleries, studios and creative neighbourhoods. On day three, a private group transfer travels to Cerdeira, a restored schist village in the Serra da Lousã. The mountain village has stairs, cobblestones and uneven terrain, and participants walk between cottages, meals and the studio.
Life during a stay
All seven nights are included: two nights in a Lisbon boutique hotel and five nights in Cerdeira's schist cottages. The shared option includes twin rooms; the private option includes a private Lisbon room and a private cottage in Cerdeira. Both options have ensuite bathrooms.
Good to know
The retreat runs October 5 to 12, 2026. Shared accommodation is USD 4,350 and private accommodation is USD 4,950; a USD 2,000 deposit is required. Most meals, essential workshop materials and Lisbon-to-Cerdeira group transfers are included. Flights, travel insurance, arrival airport transfer, one Lisbon dinner, hotel incidentals and personal expenses are excluded.

Itinerary
Day 1 · Welcome to Lisbon
Check into the boutique hotel, meet the group and share a welcome dinner.
Day 2 · Lisbon art exploration
Visit galleries, cultural spaces and creative neighbourhoods while collecting colour, texture and ideas.
Day 3 · Transfer to Cerdeira
Travel by private group transfer, settle into the mountain village and meet Marta for a guided forest walk.
Day 4 · Printing foundations
Learn block and stencil printing, carving basics and natural dye-paste preparation.
Day 5 · Design the project
Carve a personal stamp, plan the textile panel and begin translating the composition onto fabric.
Day 6 · Develop the textile
Refine colour, layering and printed elements, with time for independent studio work.
Day 7 · Assemble and stitch
Print final fabrics and combine patchwork, appliqué and sashiko-inspired embroidery.
Day 8 · Finish and farewell
Complete the textile panel, reflect with the group and return to Lisbon.
