About this opportunity
The space
Artist and illustrator James Crawford leads a relaxed watercolour and ink retreat at Château de la Ruche from 28 to 31 May 2027. Participants work from subjects in the château, gardens and grounds, learning his approach to line drawing and watercolour painting. The workshops offer time to develop work at an individual pace, with direct guidance and one-to-one feedback. Complete beginners and people with some experience are welcome.
Surroundings
The retreat takes place at Château de la Ruche in Teillé, Sarthe, France. The family-run property has 15 acres of parkland and woodland, with garden subjects for painting and drawing.
Life during a stay
Three nights of accommodation are included, in either a château bedroom or the farmhouse gîte according to the booked room. All meals, house cocktails and wine are included during the retreat.

Watercolour and ink workshops
Learn James Crawford’s line drawing and watercolour approach in small, relaxed sessions inspired by the château and gardens.
Observation and individual practice
Spend time in the grounds finding subjects to paint or draw, with guidance and one-to-one feedback from James.
